SICHUAN, CHINA -
APRIL/MAY 2006
32 bird photos + 1
scenery shot.
This
was a fascinating trip, and surprisingly good for photography. We
visited a variety of habitats, from subtropical forest in the lower
latitudes to the still snow-covered Tibetan plateau in the north. I
also enjoyed the whole experience of visiting China - seeing the
culture, enjoying the great food, though I was certainly alarmed by the
insane rate of growth and development. I had borrowed the company's
SLR for this trip, but at the time we only had a heavy, unstabilized
300 mm
f/2.8 lens. It grabbed lots of light but was very hard to hold steady
even with a tripod. However, one of my all-time favorite shots came
with that lens, the Golden Parrotbill which was published in HBW12.
Surprisingly, the White-browed Tit, which is a rather mediocre, grainy,
digiscoped shot, also was published in HBW12. It is a rare, local, and
endemic species, and it's possible that, at the time, it was the best
image in existance of that species.

Shan mountains after an April snowstorm
This
photo was not taken in black-and-white! This is really how it looked -
one of the most amazing mountain vistas I have ever seen.
