Greater Rhea Rhea americana araneipes Pousada Piuval, Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The largest extant bird in the Americas, the flightless Greater Rhea can weigh up to 27 kg (60 lbs). It inhabits savanna areas of eastern South America. (S6)

Lesser Rhea Rhea pennata pennata Punta Arenas-Punta Delgada Highway, Region XII, Chile. A characteristic bird of the windswept Patagonian steppe. They are quite common in some areas. (S5)

Lesser Rhea Rhea pennata pennata Punta Arenas-Punta Delgada Highway, Region XII, Chile. This is probably a male incubating eggs. Only males incubate and care for the precocial young. (S5)
